Hi all, I’m wanting to 3d print a Westbury Seal block, there is a file on GrabCAD for one but the file is a AD-Prt file which I can’t open , my friend who will print it for me said he needs a .stl file . How do I get it from the .prt file to a .stl file? Thanks!

.prt sound like a part file for a CAD package .  Do you know anyone with Alibra or maybe Fusion or OnShape?

Bill, no I don’t know anyone with the CAD packages you suggested , I think it is an Alibra file?

Have you looked at any of the online file converters. A number will do prt to stl convertion for free. Search in Google

Mike, hi!
Yes I have tried but nothing that I’ve tried seems to convert them properly, all come out as a lot of dots!
Thanks

That is an Alibre CAD file format, would open in Alibre only. Supposedly Fusion is able to import them, but usually not well.

Chris, thanks!
So I need to find someone who has Alibre to save it as an stl then?

Yes. You can get a free 30 day trial from them, I don't know if they limit it for saving or not.

I'm only finding images and a solidworks assembly on Grabcad, post a link to the file and I'll convert it.

Hello Mark,

That particular 3D model looks kinda naked without the mounting lugs on the sides and maybe some other features of the original engine.  :o

The way that is modeled it doesn't even need to be a casting, could easily be cut from solid.

Yes it does look rather bare!, maybe I should model it up myself!
Thanks

That is one of the problems with using the likes of Gradcad, the part is only as good as the person modeled it. I have seen that image in another forum so may relate to someone's build.

The file also needs to reflect what you what to do with the 3D print, if it is to be used as a pattern then you will need to modify it allowing for shrinkage and machining allowances, draft, etc. If metal printing then again best to allow for machining.

Here is a step file which will allow you to use the grabcad one as a basis for your own.
