Yes it is an independent 4 jaw, the jaws on the skinny side of the stock just didn’t close enough to grab without packing in there. Hex happened to be what I had a couple short pieces of handy.

Hope you heal up quick Chris! I also hope that your elves don’t venture out of your shop and into ours looking for chips during this hiatus!

Here are the photos I threatened you all with earlier.

I was able to find a couple hours over the weekend to pick away at this a little more. I was able to give the cross head another shot. This time I went for the lathe. I noticed that the boss for the con-rod is round on the drawing; I think they intend for this operation to be completed on the lathe. The boss came out pretty good this time! However I am not thrilled with the outcome of the slot for the con-rod. It is not centered very well. After moving the piece to the milling attachment I used an er32 collet to get centered on the boss. Due to the nature of the er32 I couldn’t tighten the collet. Since it wasn’t tight, I think that there’s a good possibility that I was pushing the collet out of alignment when trying to center up. I also found that the cross head hits the rail risers. I made them 1/4 instead of 3/16 so they looked the same as the rail, but this causes interference. I’ll turn up some smaller ones to rectify this. I guess that’s what I get for trying to meddle with the design!

I don’t have good service to attach photos apparently, sometimes if I go to edit after posting it works… not this time. I’ll add them soon!

    Motion! Great milestone!

When you first posted the pictures of the beams on, I must say I was surprised. Despite seeing your CAD model I didn’t expect them to be on the bottom, and had to go back to the original model again.

Where do you find all of these great drawings and references?
