Elmers #15 Fancy - Stretched

About a year ago I found a short length of (probably) 28mm AF hex EN25, don't know what that is  AISI, but it's pretty narky stuff for a 1/2 HP lathe. Anyway I decided to attempt to chew something out of it and decided maybe a stretched Fancy would be possible. Got so far and then err. well, stopped. And forgot about it to be honest.

Yesterday the box of bits came to light ... so I resumed.

The 'patina of heritage' ( rust) was cleaned off and a few other bits made, ie, the cylinder pivot and spring attachments.

Got to the point where I could part assemble it and turn it over. Woe was me. Stiff on the way up and the same on the way down. Bugger. Lots of faffing about looking for non-existent problems until I discovered that for once I'd made a piston that properly fitted the cylinder and it was compressing on the way up and vacuum pumping on the way down. Now I can be quite a bright kid (but only as a last resort) so I decided this was an opportune moment to poke the required hole in the cylinder. This being done I now have an engine that rotates happily.  #1.

Bit more to do, sort out the crankpin and the 'big-end' which is not as cock-eyed as the pic. suggests but it is wrong. ( Largely due to some old geezer who can't be bothered to check if the chuck is properly centred on the R.T.  #2). Locate and drill the port holes. The bottom 3 bits don't look as if they belong there so will probably get removed.

I should add this was to be made from bits in the 'odds 'n sods' box. No virgin materials were to be harmed  during it's manufacture.

That's it for now. Time for my 'end of day lube' then snoozy time I think ..  :LittleAngel:

Dave

Edit: 826M31 may be the spec.

Nicely done Dave. Nice finish and detail. A video would be great if you can when you have time, but the pictures are excellent.

Looking forward to seeing what you do to finish the engine off  :).

Many thanks for your comments, lady and gentlemen.

It Lives !!

Att. is a very scratty video, engine is nowhere near finished, but it goes.

Quite genuine first run, I had no idea if it would go .. although I admit, if it hadn't run at all, there would have been no video ...

Romps away rather better than I thought it would.  :cartwheel:

Nice going Dave

It's difficult to pick a favourite engine from my collection, but Fancy is definitely one of the top three, and I always enjoy seeing another one made!

Kind regards, Arnold

Thank-you for the interest Gents .
Made a bit more progress.
Got rid of the wobble on the flywheel, well, mostly. Now down to .002" on the clock but it isn't noticeable when running so that's as far as that bit goes.
Crankpin sorted and Loctited.
Some banjo fittings made. Not sure they look too good, bit clumsy, but I don't have any better ideas.
Found a lump of Ally with a hole through it so that got bunged up and the bottom part made.
Loctited the whole shebang together and it started to look like an engine.
Ran it up and it runs OK. No shaky video this time, no wish to impinge on Marv's sensitivities ..  ;D
I was going to strip, de-grease and spray with etch primer before painting it. Not keen on it as it is with a lump of ally stuck on it. However ....
[1] Some geezer appeared  wanting to sell me Solar Panels.  :zap: Got rid of him, just having a coffee and bikkies when..

[2] Jehovah's Witnesses manifested themselves at the door intent on my salvation. Advised them that there are worthier sinners to be found elsewhere and would they kindly go and seek them out as all I want to do is to paint my  :censored: engine. And off they went.  ... then ...

[3] Geoff arrived with 5 yr. old grand-daughter, Chloe.
Small Citizen gob-smacked on seeing lathe, milling machine, compressor. radial-arm saw etc. etc. WOW  :cartwheel:
'What's this for'? 'What's that do' ? Then had to get the engine running ... and again... and again.

So, it still needs dismantling and priming but here's a couple of pics, anyway.

BTW It's 5" high  not mentioned it before.

Off now to see if the Becks in the fridge is as nice as the others I've had. Don't think these things should be left to chance. Best to check and be sure. :DrinkPint:

Thats a sweet looking offering there Dave…… very well done. I rather like the looks of your banjo fittings as well, utilitarian looking they are indeed….. So now then, how was that last Becks????

Thanks for the interest chaps ... Jim, Becks was fine, as were subsequent cans, however my quest for a 'wrong un' continues  :DrinkPint:

Bit more done, on the Home Stretch now ...  :) Not too sure about the gloss paint. I have some semi-matt but it's a somewhat lighter shade of green .... Hmmmm    :headscratch:  maybe get some LMS Maroon ??? Was going to get a bit of 3" dia. x 1" brass for the base but ... £££££'s  :hellno: so here it is in alumin(i)um ( however you want it spelt )  ;D
Bit of pipework to do in the base and then it gets wrapped up ....

Sorry about the numbers on the pics. For some reason my camera has decided it's August 2006 ?? Never use a date stamp so why it's appeared now I know not.  :(

Anyway, here's some pics:

I think it looks perfect just as it is Dave. A fine looking engine, great pictures too. Please be sure to post it in the Showcase as well.
