There does not look to be a lot of distance between the crank centre line and the end of the trunk guide. Have you checked there is enough clearance for the conrod without it hitting the trunk guide?

I have to admit that I only checked it roughly. I made a rough sketch, and I think it should work.

It should be fairly easy to check as you can measure distance X and decide on the mid stroke position of the crosshead pin. Pin position can be adjusted a bit if needed as can adding a chamfer to the open end of the trunk guide.

High point is not actually at the mid point but close enough.

Hi Jason, thanks a lot for your thoughts on the crankshaft spacing. Unfortunately, I can't check that right now; I'm at the model-making exhibition in Leipzig.

A little bit of progress on the engine.
I found two crankshaft bearings in my collection that might be a better fit for the engine. They bring me almost exactly to the cylinder's centerline. However, the split bearing shells are made entirely of "WM 10"—that is, white metal—and the bore is too small. Using white metal without separate steel or brass bearing shells is perhaps not ideal, as the walls would become too thin once the bore is enlarged. In this case, bronze bearing shells would need to be fabricated.
The iron blocks have been glued in place for now, and tomorrow I will secure them further with screws inserted from underneath the base.

Regards, Michael

The bearing blocks look great for that engine, worth making new bearings for them. I like the overhead line shaft drive for the lathe too.

The bearings look the part and worth investing time in; I like your anvil 🙂
