Eine Dampfpumpe or a steam pump

I grabbed a new project from under the bench for the new year while the Stuart Grasshopper get's its paint job and final accessories.

This will all be new for me, not only my first venture into metric, but the drawings are in German, neither of which I have any experience of - what could possibly go wrong? 

I came across this little pump when Michael S was making his hand pump model and put up the link to the MBI Design Model Making website (https://mbi-design.de/wp/); I was clicking through and stumbled across the 'Doppelhubpumpe' which using Google Translate (my new friend) means 'double acting pump'.

I haven't got much in the way of metric tooling, but have a set of drill bits and bought just the taps required for the model, then discovered I have none of the hexhead metric bolts so have had to send away for those too ......hopefully they will be here by the weekend (ha, ha) and i can start machining

I've seen this pump a few times at exhibitions run by Ingo, the designer. The design is very interesting. Since I know Ingo personally, I might be able to help if you have any problems.

He also wanted to produce this pump on a larger scale.

Thats a neat looking pump!  Then you will need an engine to hook up the belt drive to...

That's great to know, thanks Michael. A bigger version would be reallty nice and Ingo must be a talented fellow to be coming up with designs such as he has, let's hope I can do it justice

That is a nice looking pump and should look good running. The only thing that looks wring to me are the rather large flat nuts and bolts. As you say quite small but I suppose there is a trade off against cost as it looks to be the most expensive pump so a larger one would be quite costly and only a few could afford that.

Look to mostly be lost wax castings so the surface should be as good as they look and may also have been a limiting factor in size as to what can fit the flask though I suppose larger could have more sand cast parts and not do all the parts in bronze just keeping that for the actual wet parts which would help with keeping the cost down.

It would be possible to alter some sizes to imperial for example the inlet and outlet are given as M5 or M6 which would be metric fine not coarse but you could no doubt go for 3/16, 7/32 or 1/4 x 40 or 32 ME

Would be nice to find an image of the pump it was based on or it may be a mix of a few similar designs to come up with a good looking model.

Seem to be a few likely candidates on the net that may have inspired this one. MAybe Sanjay should go the opposite way with this one and make the finished engien look like a barn find rather than ppaint n polish

That's an interesting pump and some nice looking castings 

I expect most of the German in the drawings will be self explanatory however I (and several others on here) can help with technical German translations.

I spoke with Ingo Berghammer today. He's pleased that someone wants to work on his castings. All the parts were made using the lost-wax casting process. This all takes place in his garage, where he casts aluminum, brass, or cast iron. The cast iron flywheel for my Stuart No. 9 is also his work.

The pump isn't based on a specific model. He sent me pictures of pumps that served as inspiration.

That's amazing he does it from his garage; the castings look high well designed and good quality. I can see how he has taken the best elements of each of the engines in the pictures and merged them into his design, very clever 

Annoyingly the bits I've ordered have a delivery date of Jan 5th, I should've looked more carefully before pressing the 'buy' button .

There looks to be a reasonable number of parts there that could be done without being able to thread/tap though possibly not enough to keep you going until the 5th.

Maybe put it to one side and squeeze in another project until the tools arrive.

I'd love to see this pump driven off the front of a steam launch engine.

I thought I'd start on the 'largest' and most complex bit first which is the pump body; if this goes wrong all the other pieces are a little unnecessary 

Interestingly the drawings do not give the the vertical and horizontal distances which I've indicated with red arrows, however, the casting has indents on it marking the positions

I'm familiar with that from my hand pump and generator. However, these markings are very precise, and I suspect he did it because a specific measurement isn't crucial here.
