Hi All !
Is there a place to ask "general" questions about machining or engines ?
It's like when I like a certain engine and want to have a discussion....before designing and machining
Or like steam engine, stirling, 2 stroke, 4 stroke, diesel... There are many issues we could discuss,...
Or how to make engine parts, components,...

This topic is old—I’ve remained silent for quite a while, but I feel I should offer a concluding remark.
Thank you for your input. However, my questions and discussions revolve around engines and machining, so the "Chatterbox" section isn't the right fit for me. Although the "Chatterbox" on this forum is maintained quite well.
My best approach is to search online and learn through trial and error—just as I have been doing all along.

There is a category called "help!" With several sub category listed, such as engine or machining

Seems I'd start there.  What are you in question of?

I intended to say more... but let’s just leave it here.

I do understand what you're looking for, I just haven't had time to set something up yet, apologies. Keep an eye on the help category over the next week or so, I'll add a new board or two.

I reported this thread to have it removed, but...

There is no need to create several additional subcategories. messing up everything that was stable
Instead, simply expand the scope of "If you are building an engine and get stuck, ask here, someone might have been through it all before." to encompass a broader range of topics. Building an engine involves many facets—design, material selection,  machining, fuel systems, and ignition—good ?    for a single-cylinder, four-cylinder, or twelve-cylinder engine.??

"Machines, Tools and Fixtures
Ask your machine, tools and fixture questions here. This is a help section so no build logs.":
The current scope is too narrow, as it misses many elements essential to the engine-building and machining process—such as painting techniques, various welding methods (TIG, MIG,.., brazing, etc.), and plating processes.

We should redefine these sections to allow for a wider scope.
This would benefit everyone: experienced builders could discover something new, while newcomers could learn from the collective knowledge and experience of others. Ultimately, it would make the forum much richer.
  Just my personal opinion.

I like the idea of a few new categories to post in, sometimes a category can be to specific or so broad it becomes a junk drawer.

Though there is always a risk of having so many it takes a lot of time to find the one you need. I have also seen on other forums where someone asks for something new to be added, a few agree and the new topic gets added and after a month or so hardly sees any use. CNC & 3D Printing on MECH would be a good example of hardly used once added.

This forum has managed with what we have for a number of years with minimal changes so does it really need altering when only one person is asking?

Also why put it in Help. If wanting to discuss say the suitability of an engine as a subject for a model, or materials, techniques, that is not really asking for help

The one line explaination in each section header is there to try to help people understand the sort of posts that should go in a section, it is not designed to limit what goes in that section. And yes the headers are not always adhered to by the posters.  When that happens we can always move it later to a more appropriate section later.  ;)

I’m not asking for any additional...?; just expanding things a little bit
Well, the forum has been around for many years, but don't you feel it’s still missing quite a few things necessary for machining? Or would you say otherwise?  ;)
I stop here , Otherwise, I might end up being a nuisance or causing trouble.  ;)

We seem to have been able to discuss things related to our hobby for 15yrs including machining. The headings are flexible as Jo says and if all else fails stick it in Chatterbox. Personally when viewing the forum I never look at what section something has been placed in. I either look down the left side or click on Unread posts since last visit. I have always been able to find somewhere to start a new thread and you have to be a bit flexible, for example where would I place an engine build that is my own design that used castings? Could go in one of two headings.

Maybe Change the "Help" heading to "Discussions including Help"

Then in that section
- Engines
- Methods, jigs & fixtures
- Machines and hand tools
- Tooling Reviews ( though that could go in one of the above)
- Mistakes, Muckeps, etc

IMHO - and this is at least partly informed by what I've witnessed in the last couple of days...

There's a lot of people who are less than comfortable using computers, who are avid model engineers. Partly, I believe that's an age thing - a lot of people are of my parents' generation, who might have only been using computers actively for the last dozen - or fewer - years. Trying to explain what a forum is can be an interesting challenge, just as they might find it challenging to explain some more esoteric machining manoeuvre to a relative greenhorn such as myself.  Even amongst my generation, and younger generations, there are still a number of people who find using computers to be something they really don't much like doing, and asking them to decipher some of the boards we have could well be something that puts them off.  I've spent 40 years designing and writing software, about 30 of those professionally, and a significant amount of time designing user interfaces, often for people just like I've described, who want things simple, straightforward and quite possibly in a large font!  Truth be told, I'm not much of a fan of the UI of this very forum (or any others that use SMF) - it was chosen largely because a) it's free, b) it's functional, and c) well supported. It even supports themes, which we've never really investigated here, but ultimately that's still just a shiny new skin over the same thing. Like wearing a spiderman costume - now you look a bit more like spiderman, but you still can't shoot webs out of your wrists...

Anyway - the point I am laboriously coming around to is this: We should always listen to people's feedback, even if it's just one person making that feedback, and try to gauge it as people who are not using the forum daily & have been for years; but as the considered opinion of someone who is sufficiently invested that they feel emboldened enough to make suggestions. I absolutely do NOT want this place to be seen as some kind of holy ground where the lofty owners live on untouchable pedestals, who know The Holy And Only Truth. I WANT to be challenged about what this place offers, how it offers it, and what people thing we can do to improve it. Anyone who has met me knows I'm no fount of wisdom.  I may know my software onions, and just about enough machining practice to be thoroughly dangerous to me and those around me... and yes, I've picked up a few UI skills along the way.

In this particular case - the ask is not that big: Just a "general help" board which is a bit more broad-brush than the more specific boards; but not quite so "free-wheeling" as Chatterbox - and, honestly, I wouldn't go to Chatterbox if I wanted help on something, I always saw that board as more of a "pub table", where almost any subject (religion and politics excluded) can be talked about between people sharing an interest outside machine tools and engines. So, to summarise, I don't think adding one more board is going to hurt the user interface any more than it already hurts; and we can look at it in 6 monnths to a year's time - and sure, if no-one's using it, we can take it away again.

The old saying "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch" doesn't apply here. It costs nothing to add a new board; and if it's only got tumbleweed in it after a period of time, there's no cost to archiving it off.

Anyway, all that said - I've got to head out shortly for a dinner with a nice gentleman who's flown all the way from Australia simply to see us at MMEX, and have a free lunch on MEM's dime  :Jester: (kidding of course, it's more like happy happenchance that he's in the vicinity while we are).

Maybe I'm reading the original request differently but I don't see it as wanting a "General Help" topic but more one for general discussions that are model engine related. In the past this has gone in Chatterbox and anything that was not related to the forum name went into Oddball which I would say is the "freewheeling" one.

I agree that the headings and descriptions can be a bit hard to decide which to use. You also have to allow for people not putting things in the right place such as this one and the one about PMs which both really should have gone to "Suggestion box & forum help".  That suggests "chatterbox" content is not adequately described or some people are finding navigation to existing topics difficult and may therefore not realise that Chatterbox can cover general discusssions about methods, materials, subjects to model, etc. and are therefore asking for what is already there.
