Having cut the main bearing flats I had to take a detour. Detour to sanity check all the dimensions and geometry involving th e timing gears and their shafts. The Oriental has two vertical side shafts running on helical hear sets. There is a LH and a RH set. I decided to design and make the gears before cutting the gear pockets and side shaft bearing holes.

Making these gears is a bit involved, as I need to make work arbors and calculate the machine change gears for four setups, as well as calculating the designs for the four individual gears. This also proves an old dog can learn new tricks. I've never made a left hand helical before. After a bit of book learn'en I was surprised how easy it was, and how well they turned out.

So now comes the tricky part, the main bearings. The plan is to flatten the pads for the mains on both sides, apply the bearing caps, and then bore the mains on the lathe. For this I need a mounting plate for the crankcase to insure everything will remain square in the mill. I also plan to use the plate for machining the center main bearing pad inside the crankcase. After the crankcase is ready, the plate will be used to mount it on the saddle on my lathe. Lots of planets have to align here.

After starting the first cut, I decided the vibration was excessive, so I added an angle plate to the setup for rigidity.

    Next, the bearing caps.

    Thanks for tuning in guys.
Dave, I didn't see a water pump on Bill Prines renovation either. I thought it should have one so I designed a centrifugal
pump. It's going inside the base. If you look closely at the base casting there is a pad inside there. When on the paddle boat, the engine probably had a pump somewhere near, but not part of the engine.

Age is slowing me down, but there is progress. I have managed to machine the base except for the water pump features. I'll wait until I do the pump before completing the base.
The Crankcase is started, top and bottom squared up with the holes for mounting the cylinders, and the holes in the base flange. Also, the internal machining for the center main bearing was done.
Next I will have to make a plate for holding the crankcase on it's end for machining the outer mains.

THis is a great idea, but it's not limited to lathe chucks

Sometimes when working with a casting it's hard to hold it for that first cut on the mill. Here is an example of a printed helper for vicing up a bearing cap.
